Gout Food Diet – The End of Your Agony

Hi, my name is Samantha Augustine, welcome to my gout food diet site. I’m not really into the World Wide Web but my son Nathaniel had insisted I write down my experience on this site to help anyone else that is or knows of someone suffering from gout. In this site I have included some of my experiences helping my husband Mark who has gout, as well as some useful lists of food do’s and don’ts along with an extensive guide that we followed.

What Mark went through was an experience I never wanted him to have again. The gout attacks would leave him paralyzed from the pain and dazed with agony as his taunt look of frustration and pain tore me to tears. Medication was expensive and the doctor could only cure what seem like the pain but not the cause of his attacks. Special gout formulas that work like diet supplements only seem to make the situation that much more dire as the treatments or temporary cures slowly drain on our retirement funds.

Food for gout sufferers borders on balancing their intake with healthy food items that fulfill their bodily needs as well as improve their resistance to a gout attack. One of the first things I learned to do was to cook up some foods good for gout that helped to improve my husband, Mark’s resistance towards gout attacks. As though avoiding all his favourite foods such as bacon and steak were bad enough, he now had to live a completely healthy lifestyle which meant more fresh vegetables, salads, fruit mixes and lots and lots of water.

It was initially a very hard road to travel for Mark as I wasn’t sure if he could eat half the things I cooked let alone the salads I made. We only found out mushrooms and asparagus was bad only after his 5th attack and he had just started to like that salad. His frustration and irritation took a turn for a worse when our daughter-in-law brought a case of vintage wine for dinner one night by accident, souring the mood the entire dinner as he disregarded my warnings to not drink it. It wasn’t until the next morning that he was limping to the toilet and outright crippled by tea time. Another trip to the doctor and another dose of drugs only made him weaker for the next expected attack.

My son Nathaniel and I decided it was best to create another fridge list of grocery food that I can use to help cook up a variety of simple and healthy dishes. After several nights of browsing through what seemed like endless pages that are filled with vague and contradicting advices online, we compiled our very own list of gout diet foods to eat.

Food For Gout

First and foremost, water is the essential fluid that is necessary to constantly rejuvenate and cleanse your system of toxins and in the case of gout, uric acid. So any intake of food before and after as well as in between meals should be accompanied with a glass of clean water. (It helps to a slice of lemon or a pinch of lime juice just to give the water a little flavour)

  • Cherries
  • Strawberries
  • Cranberries
  • Pineapples
  • Grapes
  • Celery
  • Parsley
  • Cabbage
  • Fresh Coconuts (including its juice)
  • Raspberries
  • Papaya
  • Dates
  • Bananas
  • Cereals
  • Eggs (good source of protein)
  • Rice or Pasta / Noodles ( in moderation)
  • Lettuce
  • Guavas
  • Oranges
  • Apples
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Pumpkin (Pumpkin soup is a good replacement if you like mushroom soup)
  • Milk, Cheese and Butter
  • White breads
  • Cereals

At a glance this would be most of the things we mix with on a daily basis, although an exception can be made to chicken as well if eaten in moderation. Some of the other tips I’ve learned include a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a hot cup of boiled water that should be cooled before drinking or a quarter sliced lemon squeezed into a warm cup of water to be taken every morning and night. Foods to Avoid For Gout – Your Key To a Life Free of Pain

A list of foods to avoid for gout was my first task the moment my husband Mark had gotten the gout. It was a time of constant pain, suffering and sleepless nights as I tried my best to help him ease the throbbing pain that would occur on his big toe.

It all started after Thanksgiving 2009, Mark woke up with a sudden sharp pain on his right big toe. As I recalled he was in a lot of pain and couldn’t sleep or move too much without it hurting more. By then I had called our son over and we lifted him off the bed and into the car before driving him off to the hospital.

The doctor was very kind in giving us some pain killers and a drug to reduce his swelling and uric acid including a basic list of foods to avoid with gout. However it wasn’t detailed enough to help me prepare a special balanced diet that Mark needs to reduce the level of uric acid in his body. If you ever had to see your loved one go through so much pain you would know that you would do anything to help ease his suffering. That was what I could only do.

Together with my son, Nathaniel, we scoured the internet for more information on what foods that cause gout so that I can avoid them in my trip to the grocers. From what we have gathered here is a list of foods to avoid with gout.

Foods to Avoid With Gout

The rule of thumb is to avoid any red meat, innards (stomach, intestines, etc), processed food (sausages, jerky), and most seafood except for certain fish, not to mention Beans, Nuts, Peas, Lentils and Mushrooms.

  • Turkey
  • Goat
  • Lamb
  • Beef
  • Camel
  • Deer (any game meat for that matter)
  • Pork or Swine (This includes bacon)
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Herring
  • Mackerel
  • Anchovies
  • Fish Roe
  • Shellfish (Crabs, Mussels, Prawns, Lobsters, Scallops)
  • Sausages of any kind
  • Burger patty’s of any kind
  • Peas, Lentils, Spinach, Mushrooms, Legumes, Asparagus
  • Any form of meat extract from the meats and vegetables above that are used in gravy or sauce.
  • Caffeinated drinks( Coffee / Tea/ Coke)
  • Chocolate as well
  • And last but not least Alcohol. Worst of all beer as it is made from yeast.

It was hard to watch Mark endure the pain, the sudden realization that he had to change his diet and lifestyle for his health was not easy at first for Mark. He would still continue to have sudden gout spikes that would occur when he got careless eating something within the list. As much as I would like to see him live his life to the fullest, his suffering and anguish during an attack can be heart retching. Yet we manage to solve most of Mark’s gout problem within a year.
